US Stock Market Hours
Both the NYSE and Nasdaq run 9:30am to 4:00pm ET, Monday to Friday. That much is simple.
The extended sessions are messier. Pre-market and after-hours windows differ by exchange, so when a site gives you a single pre-market time it is usually quoting Nasdaq without saying so. The table below says whose hours each row is.
| Session | Hours (ET) | Whose hours these are |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-market | 4:00am – 9:30am | Nasdaq. NYSE’s early session starts 6:30am; NYSE Arca starts 2:30am. |
| Regular session | 9:30am – 4:00pm | NYSE and Nasdaq. The one everyone means by “the market”. |
| After hours | 4:00pm – 8:00pm | Nasdaq. Most retail brokers stop earlier. |
| Half day | 9:30am – 1:00pm | Both. Late sessions close 5:00pm rather than 8:00pm. |
Extended-hours trading is thin and the spreads are wide, so a quote printed at 5:30am is not necessarily a price anyone can get. It is why a stock can be up 8% in the pre-market and open up 2%.
US Stock Market Hours Around the World
The regular 9:30am to 4:00pm ET session, converted. The two columns exist because the US shifts its clocks in March and November, and countries that do not shift (India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan) see the session move by an hour twice a year.
| City / zone | Mar – early Nov (US on EDT) | Nov – Mar (US on EST) |
|---|---|---|
| London | 2:30pm – 9:00pm | 2:30pm – 9:00pm |
| Paris / Frankfurt | 3:30pm – 10:00pm | 3:30pm – 10:00pm |
| India (IST) | 7:00pm – 1:30am | 8:00pm – 2:30am |
| Singapore / Hong Kong | 9:30pm – 4:00am | 10:30pm – 5:00am |
| Tokyo | 10:30pm – 5:00am | 11:30pm – 6:00am |
| Sydney | 11:30pm – 6:00am | 1:30am – 8:00am |
London and Europe keep the same clock times most of the year because their daylight-saving shifts roughly track the US ones. The exception is two to three weeks around each changeover (the US shifts in mid-March and early November, Europe in late March and late October) when the gap narrows by an hour and the London open is 1:30pm. India, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan do not observe daylight saving at all, so their rows simply follow the US shift.

Common Questions
- What time does the stock market open and close?
- The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq run their regular session from 9:30am to 4:00pm Eastern Time, Monday to Friday, except on market holidays. On a handful of half days each year the regular session ends at 1:00pm ET instead.
- What are pre-market and after-hours trading hours?
- On Nasdaq, pre-market trading runs from 4:00am to 9:30am ET and after-hours from 4:00pm to 8:00pm ET. Other venues differ. The NYSE’s own early session opens at 6:30am ET and NYSE Arca’s at 2:30am ET. Brokers then set their own narrower hours on top, so what a retail account actually gets is usually shorter than any of these.
- How many trading days are there in a year?
- 2026 has 251 trading days: 365 calendar days, less weekends, less the 10 full market holidays. Half days still count as trading days.
- Is the stock market open on weekends?
- No. US equity exchanges do not trade on Saturday or Sunday in any session, regular or extended.
- Does the stock market ever open late?
- Not on a schedule. On any trading day both exchanges open at 9:30am ET; a holiday closes the market for the whole day, and the handful of shortened sessions each year end early at 1:00pm ET rather than opening late. Late or delayed opens happen only in rare unscheduled circumstances such as weather emergencies or exchange outages.
- What time does the US stock market open in London, India, or Singapore?
- During US daylight saving time (March to early November), the 9:30am ET open is 2:30pm in London, 3:30pm in Central Europe, 7:00pm in India, 9:30pm in Singapore and Hong Kong, and 10:30pm in Tokyo. During US standard time each of those moves one hour later where the local clock does not shift too. The full conversion table is on this page.
- What is the next stock market holiday?
- Labor Day, on Monday, September 7 2026. Both the NYSE and Nasdaq are closed all day.
Where these dates come from
Every closure and half day above was checked against two independent sources: the NYSE’s holidays and trading hours page and Nasdaq’s holiday schedule. None of these dates are calculated. Good Friday moves every year, and when a holiday lands on a weekend the exchanges decide which weekday they observe it on. So every date is typed in from the published schedule and covered by a test. Live status is computed in America/New_York, which keeps it right through both daylight-saving switches.
Bond markets follow the SIFMA calendar, which closes on days the equity market does not. This page is US equities only.
