Tesla Q2 2026 Earnings: Record $28.2 Billion Revenue, a 1.4% Margin, and a 16% Slide

Tesla's Q2 2026 results: record revenue of $28.2 billion up 26%, adjusted EPS of $0.33 against $0.51 expected, operating margin down to 1.4%, and a 16% slide over two sessions.

UPDATE (July 28, 2026): Tesla has reported, and the margin call was correct. Tesla released Q2 results on July 22 as scheduled. Revenue hit a record $28.2 billion, up 26%, but adjusted EPS of $0.33 badly missed the $0.51 estimate and operating margin collapsed to 1.4% from 4.1% a year earlier, with operating expenses up 47%. This preview argued the margin line was the whole trade, and it was. The stock fell only ~3% after hours, then collapsed roughly 16% across the following two sessions as desks repriced it. Full numbers: Tesla Q2 2026 margin breakdown. Where it stands now: is Tesla a buy after the collapse?

TL;DR

  • Tesla reports Wednesday, July 22, after the close, webcast at 5:30pm ET, per the company's own 8-K.
  • The headline numbers are pre-spoiled: 480,126 deliveries (+25%), an 18% beat, already printed on July 2 and already whipsawed the stock (-7.5%, then +6.6%).
  • That leaves exactly one unknown that matters: automotive gross margin, because deliveries ran 28k ahead of production and the market wants to know if the beat was demand or discounting.
  • Options are pricing roughly a ±11% move, the fattest straddle of the entire earnings fortnight. At a 204x forward multiple, they're right to.

What's Already Known vs. What's Actually Reported

Bar chart showing Tesla Q2 2026 deliveries of 480,000 versus Wall Street consensus of 406,000 and 384,000 a year ago

The delivery beat is old news. Wednesday reveals what Tesla charged for those 480,126 cars.

Tesla earnings previews usually obsess over numbers that are already public. Deliveries printed two weeks ago. Revenue is roughly derivable from them. Energy storage (13.5 GWh, up 40%) is disclosed. The deliveries breakdown covered why the stock fell on a blowout: at 204x forward earnings, cars are a rounding error and the multiple lives entirely on autonomy.

So Wednesday's genuinely new information is three lines:

  • Automotive gross margin. Deliveries (480k) outran production (452k), which means inventory drained. Healthy demand does that. So do price cuts. The margin line is the only place the answer prints, and it's the single number that decides the after-hours candle.
  • Cybercab and robotaxi language. Concrete production dates feed the 204x. Another "next year" feeds the bears. There is no neutral outcome at this multiple.
  • Energy margin. The second business is compounding at 40% and remains the strongest bull argument nobody bothers making. A standalone-worthy energy margin would be the sleeper headline.

What Recent Reactions Tell You

The last delivery print showed exactly how this stock trades news: an 18% beat produced a 7.5% single-day loss, then a 6.6% bounce. That's a name where the reaction and the result have divorced, and where the second-day move keeps reversing the first. TSLA earnings have run the same pattern for years: the overnight direction is a coin flip, the week-after drift follows whichever way margins surprised. Trade the drift, skip the flip.

The Options Angle

  • The ±11% straddle is fair, not cheap, so don't buy it. TSLA is the one name that actually delivers its implied move often enough to keep the straddle price honest. No edge either side of that trade.
  • The edge is the second-day trade: fade the overnight overreaction. If margins print fine and the stock still dumps on vague Cybercab language (or rips on hype with soft margins), the reversal trade 24-48 hours later has paid on this name repeatedly, including two weeks ago. Use two-to-three-week options placed the morning after, direction opposite the emotional move and aligned with the margin number.
  • If you must position before the print, iron condor outside the ±11% expected move, small size. You're selling the one thing TSLA reliably overprices right at the event: panic in both directions at once.

Sooo... Long Into the Print?

No. Flat into Wednesday, aggressive Thursday. The delivery whipsaw already showed you this market can't decide what Tesla news means until it sleeps on it, and the margin number that settles everything is unknowable in advance. Let the coin land, read the margin line, then trade the drift with the whole week ahead of you.
