EQT Earnings (July 21): EPS Missed at $0.34, Volumes Beat the Guide, and 2026 Production Guidance Went Up 90 Bcfe

EQT's Q2 2026: revenue of $1.8 billion fell 29%, diluted EPS of $0.34 missed the $0.41 expected, but sales volume of 634 Bcfe beat guidance and full-year production guidance was raised.

Watch the Guidance, Not the EPS. That Was the Right Instruction.

UPDATE (August 7, 2026): EQT reported and the split is exactly the one this page told readers to prepare for. The headline earnings line missed: diluted EPS of $0.34 against the $0.41 consensus quoted below, with net income attributable to common shareholders of $211.4 million, down more than 70% year on year. Revenue of $1.8 billion was essentially in line but down 29.2%, because this is a gas-price story before it is an operations story.

The operations were the opposite of the earnings line. Sales volume of 634 Bcfe beat the guided 570-620 Bcfe range quoted below on strong well productivity and system optimisation, capital expenditure came in 9% below guidance, and operating costs landed at the low end. EQT generated $330 million of free cash flow in the quarter and $2.16 billion year to date, and reported the longest shale lateral it has drilled.

The guidance raise is the item that matters for the thesis. Full-year 2026 production guidance rose by roughly 90 Bcfe to 2,375-2,450 Bcfe on well performance and compression investment, with Q3 sales volume guided to 570-620 Bcfe.

So which is it? This page argued the multi-year AI-data-centre and LNG demand thesis would show up in guidance and hedging rather than in a quarterly EPS print, and that is precisely how it resolved: a bad earnings comparison against last year's gas prices, sitting on top of an operating business that raised what it expects to produce. On our reading the volume raise is the more durable signal of the two, though it says nothing about the price EQT will receive for it.

TL;DR

  • EQT, the largest US natural gas producer, reports Q2 2026 after the close on July 21. Consensus is $0.41 EPS on about $1.84 billion revenue.
  • Guidance frames the quarter: sales volume of 570-620 Bcfe (including 10-15 Bcfe of strategic curtailments) and low per-unit costs of $1.03-1.21 per Mcfe.
  • The reason this print gets clicks: AI data centers and LNG exports are the new demand story for natural gas, and EQT sits on top of low-cost Appalachian supply right where that demand is landing.
  • Watch the guidance and hedging commentary more than the headline EPS. That's where the multi-year power-demand thesis either shows up or doesn't.

The Board

Stat tiles previewing EQT Q2 2026: 41 cents consensus EPS, 570-620 Bcfe sales volume, $1.03-1.21 per Mcfe costs, and the data-center power demand story

A gas producer's print, but the thing you're really trading is electricity demand.

Why A Gas Stock Is An AI Trade

The AI buildout is a power story before it's a chip story. Every data center full of accelerators needs electricity, and in the US a large share of that electricity is generated by burning natural gas. That's the pivot that turned EQT from a left-for-dead commodity name into something the AI crowd suddenly cares about.

EQT's pitch is specific: low-cost Appalachian supply, LNG export contracts, and data-center demand in its own backyard. When Nvidia's CEO talks about a 100-billion-dollar gigawatt problem, the other side of that problem is molecules of gas getting burned to keep the racks powered. EQT wants to sell those molecules on long contracts, and it's the same demand pull showing up in the data-center power deals behind names like IREN.

What The Curtailments Actually Tell You

The guidance builds in 10-15 Bcfe of strategic curtailments, and that's a feature, not a bug. Curtailing production when spot prices are weak, and opening the taps when data-center and LNG demand tightens the market, is exactly the discipline gas investors have begged for after a decade of drill-baby-drill value destruction.

Pair that with per-unit costs of $1.03-1.21 per Mcfe, and you get the whole moat: EQT can stay profitable at gas prices that drown higher-cost producers. In a commodity business, being the low-cost operator isn't a nice-to-have, it's the only durable edge there is.

The Part The Bulls Are Skipping

It's still natural gas. The demand thesis is real, but gas is famously the widow-maker of commodities: one warm winter, one storage glut, one pipeline coming online, and the price you were counting on evaporates. The data-center story is a multi-year tailwind riding on top of a commodity that can still cut your legs out on a quarterly basis.

And the AI-power narrative has gotten crowded. A lot of the easy re-rating from "cheap gas driller" to "AI power play" may already be in the stock. If the guidance doesn't visibly extend the data-center and LNG demand runway, the print risks a "priced-in" fade even on decent numbers. The energy complex is also still hostage to macro shocks, as the oil market's non-reaction to the Hormuz scare reminded everyone this month.

The Options Angle

  • Trade the guidance, not the EPS. EQT's stock reacts to the demand-runway commentary and hedging book far more than to whether it beat 41 cents by a penny. If you're playing the event, wait for the guidance language before sizing up.
  • Bullish on the power thesis? Define your risk. Gas names gap on weather and storage headlines you can't predict, so a call spread caps what a surprise reversal costs you. Start with the calls and puts guide.
  • Own the shares for the theme? Rent the spikes. A covered call into a demand-driven rally lets you harvest premium on a commodity stock that tends to overshoot in both directions.

The One-Line Read

EQT is really a bet that AI data centers and LNG keep burning more Appalachian gas, and its low-cost, disciplined production makes it the cleanest way to play that, but never forget you're still holding a commodity that can gap against you on a warm week, so trade the demand-runway guidance and keep your risk defined.
